JONESBORO, Ark. (KAIT) - The city of Jonesboro collected over 50,000 pairs of eclipse glasses to send to South America for their annular solar eclipse in a few months.

School districts in the area boxed up all their glasses too.

Jonesboro Chief Administrative Officer Brian Richardson said it is a good feeling knowing everyone is helping those in South America get to experience something so cool.

“We worked with school districts to get them all together and it is a great example of recycling these glasses.,” said Richardson.

Richardson said between 10,000 to 15,000 glasses were collected just at city hall.

He added it was awesome to see the kids pitch in and recycle glasses that would have ended up in landfills, but are now in the hands of people who can use them.
