Tim Sherwood has told Omnisport that there is no reason that his former club Tottenham Hotspur cannot win the Champions League this season.

Spurs travel to Borussia Dortmund tonight having already beaten both the Germans and Real Madrid in Group H to book their place in the knockout stages.

Sherwood, who managed Tottenham in 2013-14 after four seasons at White Hart Lane as a player, thinks that those results will give Spurs the confidence to go deep in the competition.

He also belives that other teams will want to avoid Mauricio Pochettino’s side on the basis of this season’s displays.

“Why not? They have beat the champions haven’t they?” Sherwood told Omnisport, via Goal.com.

“I’m not buying that it was an off day, I think Real Madrid are a team on the down, I think they need freshening up, but they are still absolutely fantastic and Tottenham outplayed them, and I think at the Bernabeu they were outstanding as well.

“They will take a lot of belief and a lot of spirit from their performances they’ve had in the Champions League – the Dortmund performance was fantastic as well. They are in the knockout stages now and nobody will want to draw Tottenham in that competition.”

Victory over either Dortmund or Cypriot minnows Apoel Nicosia in their final two group games will guarantee Tottenham top spot in arguably this season’s hardest pool.

That should, in theory, set up Spurs for a favourable draw in the last 16, and on the evidence of their form this European campaign, they should have ambitions to go further.
